Hurdle Race for Project Management Certification

Nearly 50% of the people, who are opt out for professional certification, pondering on acquiring project management courses. Apart from the organizational benefits, certifications in the Project Management sector have been associated with improved employment opportunities and increased salaries. Just because of the ‘the Global Economic crisis’ and ‘a diminishing job market’, with that in mind, there’s no surprise that Project Managers are increasingly turning to get certification in order to edge over their competitors for that promotions, or even just to clutch onto their current role. It is almost becoming like a hurdle race among the project leaders.

Since its common these days, a divergence and conflict thought on choosing the certification between PMP and PRINCE2. Pointless and needless to know whether to come across this dilemma or not!

Both these two certifications are globally recognized Project Management certifications:

1. The Project Management Professional (PMP) - is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and it is based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) guide Fifth edition from May 2013. 
2. Projects in Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) - divide into Foundation and Practitioner certification is the leading offering from APMG. 

Pre-Requisites

Since this plays a role of big deciding factor on selecting either one of these course.

For PRINCE2 –There is no pre-requisites or experience required for this certification. This makes the choice of looking at this certification whereas in PMP, it requires 4 years of bachelor degree with 4,500 hours leading projects, and 35 Contact hours through PMP Prep course or High school graduation with 7,500 hours leading projects, and 35 Contact hours through PMP Prep course.

But more number of Project Managers holds PMP certifications than they do PRINCE2 Worldwide. Because the PMP appears to be a better paid certification compared to PRINCE2.

Conclusion:

Due to monetary constraints, PRINCE2 would be a better choice by the project managers and PMP comes out to be ‘the logical choice’. It really depends on the circumstances. But both the certifications would actually benefit by having knowledge of both methodologies since they offer value in different areas.
